Malvern Community School District

Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors

7:00 P.M. – Regular Meeting – October 19, 2009

East Mills High School – Library – Malvern, Iowa

 

The Malvern Community School District Board was called to order by Susan Stogdill at 7:00 p.m.  The following directors were present: Bell, Koger, Poort, Stephens, Stogdill, Superintendent Barclay, 9-12 Principal Bonesteel, PK-4 Principal Kilpatrick and Board Secretary Susan Davis.  There were 2 guests present.

Stogdill welcomed everyone and asked if anyone wished to be placed on the agenda or speak in open forum, there were none.

Bell moved to approve the agenda as presented, motion was seconded by Koger.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Michael Carey, High School Speech Teacher presented to the board the East Mills Fine Arts Magazine.  Mr. Carey recited several of the student’s poems and presented each board member with a magazine.

Mr. Bonesteel reported to the board a follow up on the High School Building Leadership Team’s decisions regarding Professional Development.

Koger moved to approve the consent agenda which includes the previous minutes, bills for payment, financial reports and three open enrollment requests.  Logan Marr out to Treynor, Brady Fritts out to Glenwood, and Jayme Fritts out to Glenwood.  Stephens seconded the motion.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Stephens moved to approve the contract to Carrie Currin as Junior Class Sponsor, Poort seconded the motion.  Ayes -5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Koger moved to approve the contract for Lindsey Sayers, High School Lunch Monitor, seconded by Bell.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Bell moved to approve the contract for Julie Babbitt, High School Lunch Monitor, seconded by Poort.  Ayes -5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

New Business:

Koger moved to approve the Request for Allowable Growth/Supplemental Aid for negative Special Education Balance for the 2008-2009 school year, seconded by Stephens.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Koger moved to approve the early graduation request for Christopher Varner pending he meets graduation requirements.  Motion was seconded by Bell.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried

Stephens moved to approve the early graduation request for Sarah Cool pending she meets graduation requirements.  Motion seconded by Poort.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Bell moved to approve the Rural Schools Resolution recognizing the importance of Iowa’s rural schools, seconded by Koger.  Ayes-5  Nays-0  Motion carried.

Administrative Reports:

Written reports were given by PK-4 Principal Kilpatrick, Middle School Principal Taylor, High School Principal Bonesteel, and Superintendent Barclay. 

Communication/Information:

A copy of the newspaper article “Boards Making a Difference Award” was given to each board member.

Information was given regarding the process that will be used to elect a new IASB District Director at the annual conference in November.  Board member Jeff Poort will be the districts IASB delegate and he was encouraged to cast his vote for Scott Hansen from Griswold.

Information was given regarding the election of a new Green Hills AEA District Director.  Ken Lee from Shenandoah was elected to this post during the election process earlier this fall.

An update was given to the board on the Football Field work and field elevation measurements, provided by Leroy Stortenbecker were shared with the Board.

Mr. Barclay updated the board on the Construction Project.  Mr. Barclay also updated the board on the District Budget, State 10% Across the Board Cut and Certified Enrollment Projections.

Mrs. Kilpatrick gave a report on the Pre-School Program’s first observation and recommendations according to QPPS Quality Standards.  The preschool was given above average ratings and was praised for offering a positive, pleasant environment for 3 and 4 year olds!

IASB School Board Officers Workshop will be held at the Glenwood High School’s ICN room on October 27th at 6:30 p.m.  

The Board’s fall retreat will be held on Thursday, October 29th at Pierce Crossing, supper at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting to follow.

Brenda Koger and Mr. Barclay shared information with the board concerning the last Reorganization Study Committee Meeting.

A Joint Malvern/Nishna Valley Board Training Session will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd at the East Mills High School Library. 

Good News!

Michael Carey presented the 2008-2009 Fine Arts Review Magazine, it was excellent.  Congratulations to our board, they will receive the “Board’s Making a Difference Award” at the State Convention in Des Moines in November.  They are one of three in the state of Iowa to receive this prestigious award.  Progress on the construction project is going very well.  A BIG thank you to Leroy Stortenbecker, Roger Johnson and their crew for all their hard work on the football field.  The Building Leadership Teams are doing great things, the board appreciates their effort and hard work.

Koger moved to adjourn, Bell seconded the motion.  Ayes -5  Nays- 0  Motion carried.  Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
